The Washington Capitals Ice Hockey team have acquired Eric Belanger from the Minnesota Wild for a second-round draft pick. The deal was finalised on Wednesday, just before the NHL's deadline expiry.
32-year-old Belanger stands seventh in the NHL ranking with 13 goals and 22 assists in 35 games. The 5-foot-11, 187-pound native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, has recorded 293 points (119-174=293) in 617 NHL games in nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles, Carolina, Atlanta and Minnesota.
The league-leading Capitals also acquired veteran forward Scott Walker on Wednesday from the Carolina Hurricanes for a seventh-round draft pick. The 36-year-old Walker has spent the last four seasons with Carolina and has three goals and two assists in 33 games this year. He is best known for his game-winning overtime goal in Game 7 of the 2009 Eastern Conference semifinals that allowed the Hurricanes to knock off the No. 1 seeded Boston Bruins.
A fifth-round selection by Vancouver in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Walker has compiled 149 goals and 245 assists to go along with 1,153 penalty minutes in 820 regular season games with the Canucks, Nashville and Hurricanes. He has accumulated one goal and seven helpers in 29 playoff contests.
In 13th place in the Western Conference with 21 games left, the Wild appear more focused on the future. They have already traded defenseman Kim Johnsson and signed another free-agent-to-be, Marek Zidlicky, to a contract extension.
