WASHINGTON, IN a first of its kind effort, is planning to restrict the use of pain killers and make laws that would require a doctor’s prescription on escalating doses of pain killers to evaluate that whether or not the patient’s condition was improving.
This attempt is being watched by medical professionals all over the world. Some of the long acting pain killers like OxyContin, fentanyl and methadone has been one of the reasons of nationwide deaths due to overdose and abuse of such drugs, some experts in drug abuse prevention said.
Drug overdose deaths are the second leading cause of accidental deaths in the US after car accidents and surprisingly they are the leading cause in some states as per the reports of Centre for Disease control and Prevention.Drug manufacturers and some patient groups have said that the new restrictions would be a harsh ruling that would affect the patient who rely on pain killers to relieve them from pain.At the same time some doctors and regulators have advocated that these restrictions should be sterner than proposed. This move to regulate the use of pain killers is also aimed to control how the doctors use narcotics to treat the genuine patients. While it is a known fact that these pain killers provide relief to patients, at the same time studies show that other people suffer from many side effects of these drugs including laziness, increased sensitivity to pain and in many cases getting fatal because of overdose. The proposed regulations won’t be applied to the cancer and patients who are at end of life as they should be given as much pain medication as necessary.
