Water borne diseases hit Sonia Vihar in east Delhi
The failure of authorities to supply clean drinking water to residents of Sonia Vihar in East Delhi has lead to the spread of water borne diseases. The locals want the Delhi Jal Board to take action and ensure clean water is supplied.
WITH THE summer season approaching, the risk of water borne diseases is getting higher. Recently, there was a report that about 15-20 cases of jaundice and other stomach ailments are being reported in east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar alone every month.

The residents claimed that they were drinking and using contaminated tap water, which had resulted in the increase in the spread of these diseases among the people.

Residents have stopped consuming tap water and have become dependent on a tanker and hand pumps. However, the situation is complicated as it is an unauthorised colony, the Delhi Jal Board tanker come only after two-three days to supply drinking water. Since the supply is not sufficient enough, the families are forced to consume tap water.

Without adequate supply of water, heath and hygiene imbalance is caused, leading to spread of water borne diseases, local said. Over and above, the colony has no sewage system, where it is lined with small open drains and a swarm of flies feasting on the open mounds of filth.

The residents claim that they are supplied contaminated water since Diwali last year and that no water testing is carried out leading to the rise of water borne diseases. The Delhi Jal Board and the concerned authorities need to give more attention to prevent the people from consuming contaminated water by supplying clean drinking water especially during the ensuing summer season, locals demanded.
