We the Indians: United or Not?
I first tried to ignore but then my curiosity got the better of me and I finally asked my friend - 'what's this disturbing sound' he said - 'arre kuch nahi there's this drunk man hitting and abusing a beggar, that's all.'
I WAS late in the evening and he was travelling in one of those local trains and as many others, we too were discussing about the after effects of the 26/11 incident, the scars that 26/11 has left on all of us as a whole, as a nation, the reality that none of us really wanted to face - Are we a strong nation?

And the most popular question being, “What next? What can we do?” Many say the system is bad, a few honest people even say it's our fault and we need to change; we need to be less corrupt, be more united. Funny part is all this sounds really nice, this fire in us looks very promising but is it really real?

Is this all for real? And somehow I really wanted to believe that just for this once it is. That just for this one time we as Indians will wake up but only up till that day. The day where we started from, the moment when I was talking to this friend of mine. Let me tell you why. While we were talking there was a constant, feeble, whimpering sound that I could hear in the background.

I first tried to ignore but then my curiosity got the better of me and I finally asked my friend, “What's this disturbing sound?” He said, “Arre kuch nahi. There's this drunk man hitting and abusing a beggar, that's all.”

My next question was, “What are you doing about it?,” and he said, “What can I do? Am just one person and clearly not as strong.” When I asked what would others do, he replied that they are minding their own business. I just remained silent, continuing to listen to his whimpers and cringing from inside.

Is this the unity we all are talking about and projecting? I mean, if a bunch of about six to seven grown men couldn't go to the drunken man and stop him from hitting a poor beggar then how can we claim that we are now finally united. That we are now changing. What I fail to understand is if you cannot stop a single man from hitting another then how can you protest against terror?

That's when I realised that nothing really has changed, it's just the same, our outlook remains just the same. And you know what - after a few month things will be back to normal (which it is bound to happen), we would again fall back into our own self centred lives probably hitting the cinemas too to see a film being made on this issue. The common man of this country is and never will be bothered about anything but his own self and probably his family.

These terrorists will again come and slap right across our faces and the media will yet again play on with the emotions and increase its TRP and the government as usual will win votes. We are Indians and proud to be so. We are Indians and proud to be incorrigible.
