The week long famous Kharchi puja festival of Tripura commenced in the state on July 5, informed my Facebook friend from the north-east part of the country. The festival is meant for cleaning of the sins of the people of the land by worshiping fourteen gods.
Chief Secretary, S K Panda, attended the inaugural programme of Kharchi Puja Celebration at Agartala. The fourteen deities were carried by members of chantai, taken to river Saidra. Head priest addressed as 'Chantai' and other priests carried idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses for holy bath at river as part of rituals of Kharchi Puja.
After being bathed in the holy water, they were brought back to temple and decorated by various flowers and the vermilion was put on the forehead of deities, as informed by tripurainfoway.com.
The Kharchi puja is performed not only to wash out the sins of the people but also performed to clean up the post-menstrual uncleanliness of earth mother's menstruation; blessings for the fertility; blessings for good crops and leading an ethical life.
For a week, every day people will throng to participate in the events at the temple of fourteen gods to seek blessings for personal and societal welfare.
