THE WEEK long (from 24th April to 30th April) economic blockade (BANDH CALL) observed by the CPI Maoists in Koraput, Malkangiri and Kandhamal districts was a grand success, claim the wall posters pasted by the Naxals appearing in all most all the block head quarters.
In fact the oldest culvert constructed by the British engineers at Basanaput before independence and the culvert on the other side constructed by the Indian engineers after independence near Chidivalasa under Bandhugaon Block was completely damaged by the CPI Maoists. Basanaput culvert was on the way from Narayanpatna to Bandhugaon and the Chidivalsa culvert was on the way to Parvatipuram from Bandhugaon.
The Bandhugaon block has now become an isolated Block without road communication facilities and the present speed of works continues for re-construction of these two culverts, it will take at least six months to complete the works. This is the block which created history for rampant corruption under various anti poverty programs even including the NREGS presently renamed as MNREGS. Two buses belonging to APSRTC were burnt near Chintapalli of Andhra Pradesh bordering to Malkangiri district of Odisha by CPI Maoist during the period of Bandh. The CPI Maoists also damaged the road at Toyaput near Laxmipur under Koraput Rayagada state highway on the ghat area which is under repair. Earlier one day before Bandh call (on 23rd April) the moists damaged Mobile phone tower and the Indian made foreign liquor shop on the road side of kudumuluguma block of Malkangiri district and on the last day Friday the weeklong economic blockade the moists shot dead one Chita Roy, contractor at Malkangiri Village 69 (MV69) of Malkangiri district. The seven day Bandh call created tension among the people and government officials under Malkangiri and Koraput Districts. The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation, The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport corporation stopped playing the buses in Naxal dominated areas during the Bandh. The OSRTC and APSRTC buses remained off roads in Jeypore to Malkangiri via Boipariguda, Rayagada to Gajapati, Malkangiri to Chitrokonda, Berhampur to Phulbani, Phulbani to Paralakhemundi and Jeypore to Bhubaneswar via Rayagada. Private bus owners also suspended bus services to all the naxal dominated areas during the week long Bandh. The officers under Malkangiri and Koraput were virtually under house arrest during one week long Bandh.
