Week-long training of master trainers of tribal Maa Baris commences in Udaipur
A six-day training of around 80 master trainers of tribal Maa Baris - small primary schools in remote tribal region of Rajasthan - is going on in Udaipur. The training will conclude at end of this week. The training is being co-partnered by Rajasthan's Tribal Area Development Authority, UNICEF and Center for Unfolding Learning Potentials -a Jaipur-based NGO that specialized in multi-grade and multi-level teaching (MG-MLT) strategies.
The training involves use of puppets, visual symbols, games, masks, singing, role plays, big books and worksheets as pedagogical tools. In the residential training, even the participatory review sessions, diary writing and reading sessions and cultural programmes are being held. For the training of teachers of Maa Baris, cascade model is going to be adopted since several hundred small schools are being opened after training the teachers in new teaching methods.

It has been found that MG-MLT strategies are most suitable for small schools in remote areas wherein a teacher has to engage more than one class simultaneously. The curriculum in such situation has to restructure in terms of levels of learning instead of grade-wise.

In a focus group discussion last month with the functionaries if Gurugram-based IMPRINT NGO and CULP, it emerged that for primary education the multi-level has been found to be most appropriate through various pilot projects and now the curriculum required to standardized in the form of learning package with provisions of proper teacher training for transacting such curriculum.

Various educational projects like Rishivalley's RIVER project, Lok Jumbish, Shiksha Karmi Project, Janshala Project, Pehchan Project and many more initiatives of similar kind have shown the efficacy of multi-level learning.

Earlier trainings of master trainers of Maa Baris have shown that around 30-40 levels of learning in each subject for entire primary education were suitable with proper learning material in multi-grade school situations. Also, a UNESCO-sponsored study said that MG-MLT strategies with proper training and support system in India had been very successful.
