Weight loss: it's easy if it's done the right way!
Weight loss is a subject that's widely discussed. But, often, a uninformed way of going about weight loss can be ineffective and lower morale. The best way to gain from an exercise regimen is to..

For instance, it has been seen in many cases that more importance is given to losing weight than on the fact that losing weight the ‘right’ way is more important than losing it in a hurry. In a bid to lose kilos, intricate details like side effects of quick weight loss, are overlooked.

Apart from side effects, more often than not, the weight lost in a hurry can come back. In some cases people have gained more weight on the ‘rebound’ after going on a fast-track weight loss regimen.

As a motivating factor those embarking on a weight loss program should realize that as one ages it gets tougher to shed those extra kilos and that happens due to many factors. Most of the time, because of the lack of will to fight weight gain, people just let go - and with that they let go of good health, good looks and of course great (feel-good) compliments!

First and foremost is to know your body. Have you ever lost weight or inches in the past? Go back and recollect, as to know how and what worked for you. And if you have tried and not succeeded then one needs to look at the cause, find the solution, and fix it.

The reasons why losing weight has not worked can be hidden deep inside your genetics, body type, lifestyle, wrong diet, stress, hormonal imbalance, or lack of sleep, or factors that are yet to be ascertained. This information is crucial because after the weight loss, if in the future, you happen to gain some kilos or inches, you know what you did wrong and how can you get back into shape easily.

Getting oneself pumped up can get you off to a good start. Look at a weight loss regimen as if you are embarking on a brand new project, and that you have to give it your 100 per cent - just the same way you would start a brand new week on a Monday after having enjoyed the indulgences of the weekend!

Likewise, start preparing for changes in your lifestyle and tell yourself that you are doing it for your health and for your own sense of self-worth.

Try to avoid making losing weight as a one-off event. You must have noticed people lose or gain weight for occasions such as weddings or birthday parties within a very short span of time. The after-effects of such weight loss can be disastrous.

The ‘in’ thing these days, when it comes to quick weight loss, is something called ‘spot reduction’. But there’s no such thing - when you lose weight the natural way, you lose everywhere.

An important piece of information in the campaign to thin down is to know your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), which plays an important role at every stage of your life. It can be defined as the minimum amount of calories required to sustain the body’s functions and processes - when the body rests. It is responsible for consumption of about 70 per cent of total calories the body uses.

Keeping track of your BMR is very important if you want to lose weight or keep your weight under control. It has been seen that BMR normally decreases with factors such as genetics, age, gender, weight, body temperature, diet, and exercise, etc. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of your BMR.

Once you know your BMR you can adopt the particular way of losing weight that suits your body type. All of us are different and have to follow a unique pattern to increase our metabolic rate.

Please keep in mind that we have to eat more not less to increase our BMR so that your body can burn lot of calories at rest as well and result in weight loss.

Your metabolic rate can be increased by making a few but solid changes in your daily habits. More exercise, right diet, consumption of adequate amount of water, sleep patterns, and lot of thermogenic food (food that increases metabolic processes), etc., can help boost the BMR, and help you shed the kilos - faster.

Thinking about all these factors will help you know your body better in order to get the best results based on real facts and figures. So if you are someone who is constantly fighting the battle of the bulge, look at solutions reasonably and practically.

In this series of articles on weight loss, we will discuss different ways of doing so for different kinds of people. Watch this space.
