IT REFERS to welcome media-reports about cementing of personal relations (rather friendship) between UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Opposition Leader Sushma Swaraj as also witnessed in the ceremony to mark 19th death-anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Vir Bhumi (New Delhi) on 21.05.2010.
Political differences apart, personal relations between rival politicians of opposing parties should always be cordial not only in their own personal interests but also in national interest because such relations can be fruitful towards politics of consensus rather than of traditional bitterness.
There was a time when two Houses of Indian Parliament used to function rather smoothly without wasting much by interruptions because of sense of humour by parliamentarians like Pilu Modi or Atal Bihai Vajpayee. Once the then Opposition Leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee challenged the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for a public-debate at Ramlila Grounds (New Delhi). Mrs Gandhi tried to avoid by saying that Vajpayee’s Hindi was beautiful. Lok Sabha was in full laughter with Vajpayee’s instant response that Indira Gandhi in herself was beautiful!
Cementing personal relations between Sonia Gandhi and Sushma Swaraj should be motivating for other politicians too.
