WITH A leaked HTC smartphone running the much hyped Windows Phone 7 two days ago, the US mobile carrier, AT&T has said that they will be carrying the Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

The US mobile carrier has stated that they will be the ‘premier’ carrier of the yet to be announced smartphones running the Windows Phone 7 OS. They have said this in a statement to the tech magazine PC World.

‘We’ll be the premier carrier for Windows Phone 7,’ a spokeswoman said via e-mail on Monday. ‘We haven’t given guidance on timing.’

The latest mobile OS from Microsoft was announced at the Mobile World Congress in February 2010. Microsoft had then said that the mobile phones running on Windows Phone 7 will be available on all the major carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon.

While the Microsoft’s statement is quite clear, it is unknown that what the word ‘premier’ carrier means in the statement by AT&T. It is just a speculation that what this word means and does it have to do anything with exclusivity over certain handsets running the OS.

Microsoft has been trying to revive its mobile OS market of which it was a crown jewel till a few years ago. It has lost it market share to some new mobile OSes like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android along with old rival RIM’s Blackberry.
