THE ALLIANCE between the Congress party and the Trinamool Congress, led by rail minister Mamata Banerjee trounced the Left Front in the by-polls held in 10 assembly seats in West Bengal. The alliance has already won five seats and is leading in three others in a vote, which is being seen as precursor to the next state elections.

Trinamool Congress of Mamta Banerjee won Bongaon, Serampore, Alipore and Rajganj, while Congress won the Sujapur seat in Malda district. Trinamool's Bobby Hakim defeated his nearest rival Kuastav Chatterjee of CPI-M by over 27000 votes.

Trinamool candidates are also leading in Egra, Contai South and Belgachia (East). In Sujapur, which is a Congress stronghold, Abu Nasser Khan Chowdhury won by a margin of 29,479 votes.

The victory of the the Trinamool has elated the opposition, though polls were mostly conducted in opposition strongholds. The by-election results are being seen as an indicator of people's unhappiness with the Left front.
