The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) will shortly have a policy against sexual harassment during internship. The swift decision was taken by the university after getting successive complaints by two of its ex-students about sexual harassment during internship. The policy is still in the construction stage, and will come into implementation by the end of this month.
WBNUJS spokesperson Ruchira Goswami talked about this policy and said, “This is basically a prevention policy during internship, we just have a rough draft, and it needs to be finalized and by the end of this month we will have the final policy to combat sexual harassment during internship.”
She also said that, “Apart from that we are looking for a comprehensive policy to combat sexual harassment at workplace, which will include the staff as well as the students. Now that we have the law and policies for sexual harassment, we will have a comprehensive policy, that will combat sexual harassment in the university, but this will take a little time.”
According to this policy, if any complaint is received then a formal process of taking action against the reported harassment will be done, irrespective of whether the internship was opted by the student or was provided by the university. As long as the student are associated with the University, they are the responsibility of the University, said Goswami.
As the students becomes extremely vulnerable during the internship period, they usually don't complain about the harassment by the seniors or the legal fraternity. So the rules and guidelines will be drafted according to the convenience of the students who are doing their internship with the university.
