As their back was pressed against the wall, the transgender community felt the need of making an institutionalized effort to fight back for their existence and so was formed the ATHB network to protect and safeguard the interest of the transgender and hijra community in the state of West Bengal.
The network understood that they need to increase the visibility of the community and for that purpose they started an annual event titled "Transgender Day".
The event started six years back and this year will be the seventh consecutive year. However, previously there used to be one event centrally organized at Kolkata where the network partners and associates from different districts of West Bengal used to come and participate.
But from the year 2014 the network has also started the program at district level to reach out to more number of community people and main stream at rural. The events started from the first week of April 2014 at district level and on 30th April 2014 will be grand event at Kolkata at Ranu Chhaya Manch near Academy of Fine Arts.
Moreover this year the event is attached with special significance after the declaration of Supreme Court Verdict which has recognized the transgenders as the third gender. It was a long battle won and so the event this year will be a celebration too other than being an annual event to increase community visibility.
ATHB has been organizing various events rallys etc all the year round in support of the transgender and hijra community. ATHB started "Bengal Rainbow Pride Walk" from 2013 to celebrate the beginning of the LGBT movement globally.
Previously this pride walk used to be organized by MSM organizations but they were too snobbish and included only the cream of the population in the walk leaving the rural and grass root level population. But ATHB wanted to include the larger community in the Pride Walk especially including grass root level, economically unsound population in the Pride Walk. So the network started Bengal Rainbow Pride Walk from the year 2013.
This year the network has integrated the pride walk with Transgender Event to give a larger shape to the entire event.
The pride walk will start on 30th of April 2014 from Hazra crossing at around 4.30 pm and will terminate at Ranu Chhaya Manch and thereafter the Transgender Day Event will start at around 6.30 pm. The event will comprise of various cultural events and will extend till around 9.00 pm. The network is expecting huge responses from the transgender and hijra people and also others which will make the event a great success.
