West Bengal's gang rapes: Dent on our society and vibrant culture
Nirbhaya gang rape case and other such heinous crimes are always done by few anti-social elements who are always condemned by the society. We always take pride that our society is very vibrant and our culture is not only ancient but also greatest.

This pride sounds hollow when one learns the reality of a Birbhoom village in West Bengal where a tribal girl was gang raped by 10 people who were allegedly ordered by the village Panchayat.

The tribal girl's only crime was that she loved a boy outside her community. She was seen talking with her lover on Monday (January 20, 2014) afternoon and both were dragged to a religious place of the village. Immediately villagers were assembled to make a Kangaroo court and then delivered the verdict that the boy and the girl had to give monetary fines of Rs 25000 and Rs 50000 respectively.

The girl and her family expressed inability to pay the fine and hence the village committee head sentenced the girl to be gang raped by 10 youths for non-payment of the fine. Accordingly the girl shifted to a shed and being continuously raped till Tuesday Morning. The girl was seriously bleeding and wanted to go to a nearby hospital, but rapists stopped them and threatened.

However on late Wednesday the girl slipped out of villager’s watch and first reached Labhpur health centre in a serious condition from where she was referred to Bolpur sub-divisional hospital. As per doctors, she is very critical and till now survived because she is a tough tribal girl!

The story above may appear as a film story, but it’s a reality in many of our society particularly in rural belts. The police has already arrested 13 people including the head of the village. Political mudslinging started where people asked why under Mamata Banerjee government such heinous things are happening.

Point is, why Mamata Banerjee to be blamed and why not our society? Is such inhuman crime is only responsibility of the government and the police? Interestingly the same village was in news four years back when the villagers compelled another girl to walk naked on the streets of the village and was molested by village youths!

The girl later reported this incident and got bravery award from Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh. You would be astonished to know that this village is just 60 km from Tagore’s Shantiniketan!

It’s easy to blame governments and police for continuing rapes. What about our social system. Such Khap Panchayatas and Kangaroo courts are running uninterruptedly throughout the length and breadth of the country.

Let the activists focus and dare these belts! This 20 year tribal girl is another Nirbhaya and let’s hope for her quick recovery.
