World Health Organization (WHO), in its global status report about road safety disclosed that India reports the highest number of road traffic accident cases in the world, although it has only one percent of the world's total motor vehicles. The report says ninety percent of the deaths due to road traffic accidents occur in low and middle income countries.
There can be many causes of road traffic accidents, the most common causes are discussed below:
Intoxication – the drivers who drink and drive, cause most of the road accidents.
Bad weather – bad weather condition can be treated as a biggest cause for road traffic accidents. Bad weather leads to poor visibility problems which leads to collision with other vehicles or static objects like trees or poles.
Distraction - if the driver is distracted by something going on inside or outside the car, then it may lead to accidents. Generally driver is distracted by another accident on the road. He can also get distracted while checking his mobile phone or changing the CD's. Anything that takes your eyes off the road can be the cause of distraction and such situations can lead to an accident.
Defects in the vehicle – the road accidents can be caused by some defects in the vehicles such as break failure or bursting of tyre.
Road design – poor road designs can cause accidents. It can be the wrong placement of signs which block the view of incoming traffic.
