What is Google Duplex and how does it help the business class?
Duplex is a revolutionary evolution of artificial intelligence by Google. It lends its helping hand to the business men for making automated calls and fixing appointments. But, the data security and taking the consent of the data subject raise a question over its viability and usability.

So! Have you ever tried Google's Home or Amazon's Echo? The work of both devices is synonymous and that is voice assistance.

Therefore, you can call such devices as your voice assistant. Like the real voice, it delivers the similar experience. It's no more a secret that they use voice recognition, natural language processing and speech synthesis. 

Plainly speaking, artificial intelligence in association with machine learning and voice recognition technology has evolved an alternative of the human voice.

On May 4, Google I/O 2018- an annual developer conference, held by Google in Mountain View, California. It's an official ritual that has been taking place since 2008. The like-minded people gather to exchange the advances in the app development (web software, mobile apps), artificial intelligence, machine learning and open sources, like Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, APIs, Google Web Toolkit and App Engine.         

This year, I/O meet spotlighted Duplex-an AI based digital call assistance.   

What is Google Duplex?

Google's CEO Sundar Puchai came with an on-stage demo of its Duplex.  It's the artificial voice assistance for the entrepreneurs. How?

Let's think of a scenario wherein an entrepreneur fails to derive time for making calls to potential customers. However, Gmail launched in a new avatar while offering push notifications and automatic response features.

Duplex is developed on a bit different model. While disclosing the fact, its CEO revealed that nearly 60 percent small business owners in the US have to rely on phones for generating leads rather than PPC or CPC ads. They can't target audience unless they ring in particular to the target audience. Due to limited capital and inputs, they have to give up the idea of extra-ordinary leads and conversion.

To overcome this problem, Google evolved efficient and really effective voice assistance. They can now fix an appointment over-the-phone. It would notify the target audience that it's being recorded. While demoing it, it resonated with more like a human being. In simple words, it was a bit difficult to distinguish the instinctive voice and artificial utterance.   

Steve Streza tweeted -People who have difficulty speaking, people who have difficulty hearing, people who get anxiety when speaking on the phone, people who are not native language speakers. All are going to have their lives significantly improved by AI-driven calling.

What's a Turing Test? Did Duplex pass it? 

Alan Turing-the father of Artificial Intelligence, coined Turing test. It evaluates whether or not the machine is able to mimic human perceptions. It has been followed since 1950. The technology architects and scientists let the evolved technology converse with the computer. And, the third party plays a key role. It determines which one is a machine. If it fails to identify, the technology passes that test.

It's a close call for this technology. It took a keen observation and deep analysis to measure up its less efficiency than a human response. Impartially saying, it qualified the test when it came to making an appointment. But indeed, the artificial intelligence is all about making machines capable of behaving like a human being. This innovation is impressive, but only in a general way. Scientifically, it doesn't match up the ultimate aim of performing any task as we do.

Google admitted that Duplex can carry out organic conversation. But, it's not a walkover. One has to chew bullets to train it in a specific domain. Thereupon, it would follow his footprints. Explicitly, it can't be compared with the spontaneous conversation of a man. This technology is in the nascent stage. Possibly, an intensive training can take it to the top of the world.   

How does it work?

Its mechanism lies in the deep learning, voice recognition, text-to-speech transmission and natural language understanding. You need to record. The recorded voice would be fed in the cloud. There, parsing will convert one data type into the machine learning format.

Alternatively, it would need an on-device AI chip to parse and process query in a human language. Thereafter, the Duplex on your behalf can, let's say, schedule an appointment anywhere at any time.

Once you're done with feeding memory, it will speak as you do on a phone. If you input imperfections, like repeating, correcting sentence and omitting words & speech disfluencies (Oh, Umm), it will take those things into account and behave accordingly.  

How will it be useful for businesses?

It's a souvenir for the businessmen, especially the small business owners.

For instance, a cottage industrialist can make a call, fix an appointment and get the business. It's as simple as that. Such entrepreneurs generally don't have deep pockets. Employing a business development manager, voice support and a personal assistant can make a big hole in his pocket. Hence, he can't dream of expansion. Scalability of his business would be minimal.

With this kind of automatic voice interaction, he can reply smartly. And those who experience cold feet  while encountering the outside world, it's a boon. Lacking language proficiency (of the non-native speakers) can never lag with it.

Alongside, there are certain points that pushed the buzzer. They incited controversy.

What controversy does it create?

With the implementation of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) since May 24, 2018, it's a major issue to share the data of data subjects. Likewise, it would be a tough call for this assistance also. You can't record the call of the data subject without his consent. You have to disclose the 'what and why' before recording the data.
