What is independence all about? There's a need to ponder over
One more Independence Day celebration! India is going to celebrate its 70th Independence Day as freedom from the British rule was achieved on 15 August 1947.

The day was ceremonially observed when Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi followed by a speech.

Thereafter, on each subsequent Independence Day, Indian Prime Ministers have been unfurling the tri-colour at the Red fort and delivering speeches. And, as a national holiday, the event is marked by flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events throughout the country.

However, there is a need to revisit the notion of independence rather than giving popular speeches and distributing sweets to the kids in schools. There is difference between gaining freedom and being independent. One may gain freedom from one regime and yet not be independent.

Here is my ABC poem on 'Independence' to understand it as a concept:

A: Autonomy and self-governance which is fair and just; B: Being sovereign with a defined territory; C: Creation of symbols of national identity like flag, anthem, national days, national institutions, national and recognized languages, and national policies; D: Diversity is respected and unity is forged, including economic unity, with equally accorded and afforded fundamental rights to all safeguarded by law; and E: Emancipation through lawful empowerment and democratisation of governance.

If the attributes of independence as described in the ABC poem are not visible on ground, it turns out to be being administered from one regime to another.
