What's going wrong with our school system?
Of late, it has been observed that with technology being seen as the substitute for the teacher and externalities like designer uniforms; commission-based glossy textbooks and glamorous stationery; enhanced physical comforts in the classroom; market-aided competitions and talentism have led to social, psychic and academic marginalisation of the most students in the educational institutions.

And, all this was producing mental distress and distaste for studies among young children and referral to counsellors and psychiatrists has increased, said a child psychiatrists in Jaipur.

He hinted that with schools now deep into use of isometric devices and CCTV survillence of students; creation of smart classrooms; glamorous outlook of the school; management of externalties had the focus on fleecing students and not for supporting their innate potential to learn; the parents were now looking for resources from outside the schools for learning and well-being of their children even beyond tutoring and coaching.

Schools and education system now have got deep into subscribing for branded similarity and uniformity presided over by exploitative and profit making market forces. The respect for diversity and implantation of differentiated learning methods have been buried deep down.

Recently, I met a person in a shared cab and he said he was an education therapist who provided home-based individualized academic services to children with learning style differences; learning disabilities related to reading, writing, calculation; and visual information processing, he explained with good command on professional jargon. He added that he charged Rs 5000 per month per child to work on individual basis for one hour sessions.

He told me that way with which nicely packaged bad schooling was happening, even in Jaipur, there was a demand for educational therapists but the city has none except him. He told that he did his course on family therapy from an open university and then an online foreign course to treat children with learning differences, learning disabilities, and slow-pacing in learning.

Before getting down from the cab to work with his first child-client at this destination, he designs intensive multi-model interventions to remediate learning problems of children put at risk of failure by the perfumed mainstream school system which tries hard to conceal its stink through outward glamour. And, the conversation got me wondering that things in schools have come to such a pass!
