What's Guru Purnima all about?
The full moon day in the month of Ashadh (June-July) of the Hindu calendar is celebrated as Guru Purnima by both Hindus and Buddhists. Guru Purnima is the time to honor the Guru and this year the festival falls on 3rd July.

GURU PURNIMA is a day when we pay obeisance to guru-shishya-parampara or mentor-protégé lineage. According to Hindu philosophy, the guru dispels the darkness of pandemic ignorance that is prevalent in the world and gives his or her disciples the light of self-knowledge along with the worldly knowledge.

Self-knowledge consists of how to transcend the illusions of the world and be liberated, which is the hallmark of excellence of human existence.

The teacher-student relationship has been given a great importance in Hinduism. The guru occupies the divine pedestal as he or she can lead us to self-realisation by imparting the true knowledge.

On Guru Purnima, deep gratitude is expressed to our gurus and Ved Vyasa, the sage who codified the Vedas containing self-knowledge and enlightenment.

Here is my acrostic on GURU.

G: Great intellectual and wise person who

U: Ushers in the light of self-knowledge to

R: Remove the darkness of ignorance about the

U: Ultimate aim of human life which is liberation or self-realisation
