When an honest cop saved others from false case
Eighteen years back, Dr JohnV George, the then IG of Rohtak Police Range was sitting in his official residence when the erstwhile Rohtak SP PK Aggarwal told him that the top boss (CM) had asked him to register a criminal case against AS Chawla; Anil Kumar and Jindal Sahib, Sessions Judge of Rohtak for conspiring to kidnap the teenage daughter of the Additional Sessions Judge.

All these four officers were posted in Rohtak few years back. Somebody had eve teased the teenage daughter of the then Additional Sessions Judge Mr Kapur Sahib, who doubted that former SP AS Chawla; Anil Kumar, former DC and Jindal Shaib, the former Sessions Judge were behind it and lodged a complaint with the police which was disposed off, finding no merit.

Few years later, when OP Chautala took over as the Chief Minister, Kapur approached him with his old complaint using his political clout. Although Chautala had nothing against Chawla and Jindal, but was annoyed with Anil Kumar, whom he believed that as Returning Officer of Rohtak Lok Sabha seat had declared Bhupinder Singh Hooda winner defeating his father Ch Devilal.

So SP PK Aggarwal was directed to register a case.

Dr George asked Aggarwal not to register the case and explain the real position to the CM. But Aggarwal could not muster the courage to defy him.

George himself went to the CM and as a shrewd Keralite, handled the tough Haryanvi boss stating: “Sir this never happens even in Bihar and if a case is registered it will become international headlines and bring bad name to the state.”

So the matter was settled. I had about four decades’ old friendship with George and I am proud of him. More such incidents in my coming book on Haryana Police titled 'Humour in Khakhi", covering major incidents of last fifty years.
