When teachers are the learners: Educational essayist's perspective
While reading an essay titled 'A Model of Assessment in Classrooms and Schools' in the book "Assessing Students in Classrooms And Schools" by RJ Wilson, a noted evaluation expert, a statement by the author was found very revealing. The statement read: 'One way to put the school's practice into perspective is to consider the school as a class and teachers as learners'.

As a grade level is a class of students, a school is a class of teachers; this idea is potent enough to view a school as a learning organisation, and students and teachers as co-learners.

If we consider this observation of the author seriously, it is expected of teachers that they must live up to the tenet of life-long learning themselves. In other words, teachers need to get into the mode of self-learning themselves to make their students self-learners.

According to author of the essay, the learner-teachers are great problem solvers and they keep on learning to improve their practices various means like reading, action researching, innovations and interventions.

The classrooms need to be seen as the community of learners and teachers as senior co-learners. The implications is the essay is that teachers need to support their own and students learning with the school being viewed as a learning organization.

Furthermore, learning and life need to be connected in schools so that the teachers, students and schools become learning entities. Only, schools which can cast themselves into learning organizations can make education inclusive, relevant, equitable and qualitative.
