The glory of Indian spin has rubbed off. With more priority given to pace bowlers, spin bowlers are being left out of team, for which India faced defeat at the hand of Srilanka in the recent test match. Its time for BCCI to re-think.
WHEN WE got acquainted with spin bowling the entire cricket world was conversing about the fast and medium fast bowling. Once the other countries are performing well with spin, India is worrying to put up a good show with the same. Now all our batsmen bowed their heads in shame to Srilankan spinners.
The performance of the India prior to the coming of Kapli Dev as the only spin bowler, Bedi, Prasanna and Chandrasekhar were lauded by other cricket countries as
‘spin trio’. Using a little pace Chandrasekhar had troubled all famous players with his leg cutters, for which India had won series against England in UK, first time outside the country. The great West Indies players VIV Richards, Rohan Kanhai and even the famous spinner Gibbs used to commend them. If we recollect, a question would arise, where are we?
In the resent past, pace bowling emerged as a priority in the Indian cricket while spin bowling started losing its importance. Even though with spinners like Kumble and controversial Harbhajan Singh in the team, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has failed to find good spinners. Mean while, Shane Warne of Australia has ruled the cricket world with his outstanding spin bowling. The Mendis bowling style reminds us of the bowling of our veteran Chandrasekhar, which was like a medium fast spin.
Indian cricket doesnt seem to have a proper balance between the spin and fast bowlers since the recent times. It seems that the spin bowlers are being left out with more priority given to pace bowlers.
