WHIRLPOOL Corp. issued the biggest U.S. dishwasher recall in three years to fix 1.7 million of its Maytag models with a fire hazard. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the Maytag dishwashers have a faulty heating element that can cause short-circuit and ignite.

The agency cautioned all users of the dishwashers to immediately stop using the Maytag and disconnect the power source by pulling the fuse or flipping a circuit-breaker.

Whirlpool, Benton Harbor Michigan based manufacture, received 12 reports of fires with the plastic models, including a blaze that caused extensive kitchen damage. NO injuries have been reported.

Earlier, General electric Co. recalled 2.5 million units in May 2007 and Maytag recalled 2.3 million units in February 2007 after 135 fires were reported. Those are the only dishwasher recalls involving more than 500,000 units in the past decade.

Maytag sold the recalled units at department and appliance stores and homebuilders from February 2006 through April 2010 for $250 to $900, according to a company news release.

As per agency website, Maytag will repair the appliance in customer’s homes without charge. Those consumers who prefer new dishwashers will get a rebate of $150 or $250 towards a purchase of one of seven new Maytag stainless steel models.

Maytag dishwashers sold with Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa and Crosley brand names are covered by the recall.

The model and serial numbers are listed on a label inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door.

Whirlpool, which bought Maytag in 2006 for $2.6 billion, rose 3 cents to $103.57 at 10:02 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares had climbed 28 percent this year thorough yesterday.
