Who broke Vidya Sagar's statue?
When I switched on the TV on Tuesday night (14th May 2019), I was shocked to learn from the TV news that large scale violence had occurred during Amit Shah's road show because of clashes between BJP and TMC cadres.

In this process, the statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was vandalized and thrown out in pieces. I became very sad. Immediately I posted in one of my WhatsApp groups (Encounter With Wisdom) that the BJP had done a blunder here. Vandalizing Vidyasagar's statue will hurt Bengali sentiments and whatever BJP expects from last phase of election will remain elusive. TMC would get all the 9 seats going to poll on 19th May, 2019. My observation was based on TMC's video proofs that were flashed on all the TV channels on the clashes among BJP and TMC cadres, stone pelting, arson and vandalizing the statue by people wearing saffron coloured clothes.

Immediately, many Bengali members of the groups reacted by saying that it could be TMC's conspiracy as the BJP wouldn't spoil such a chance. Some also said claiming eye witness accounts that it was TMC members who had conspired the act. However, none of the arguments satisfied me. The point to be noted is that this WhatsApp group is purely apolitical and the members are unbiased and from informed society.

Then, as a habit, I started doing data mining and studied the videos carefully. I also got the video statement of veteran old rank Congress leader Arunav Ghosh (who is a lawyer, intellectual and a hardcore anti BJP) on the entire issue. On scrutinizing everything despite that I am not in a position to say clearly who really broke the statue, I can summaries a list of points which creates doubt. The points are as below:

·        If you look very closely then the clash between BJP and TMC cadres and statue vandalizing didn't happen sequentially as it appears so. During the clash police and media were present and the road show was on. Whereas during statue vandalizing neither the police was there nor the media. It can't happen that statue is vandalized and media didn't capture it through their cameras. Thus, statue vandalism occurred after Amit Shah's road show when police and media had left the area.

·        It was clearly visible that the front gate was pushed by the BJP workers and might have broken that gate too in the presence of police and media. Police tried to control the situation and perhaps managed to control too. That's why all the hooligans were cleared from the area. The vandalism occurred after the road show and all police and media left the place.

·        If you see closely, you will find that second gate was an iron grill which can't be broken using sticks. The video also shows the grill was open in a normal way. That means if it was locked then the lock is opened (or broken). No TMC's video shows how the grill was opened or broken. I don't understand why this video wasn't made on second gate (iron grill).

·        You can see that some people brought the statue from inside and threw it outside where a few people wearing saffron clothes were present. Not all saffron dressed men become BJP supporters. That doesn't mean that inside    the college there were no ABVP students also. But question arises that could the BJP workers or ABVP students have been able to overpower TMC people or students in the absence of police and media?

·        The statue is under surveillance of CCTV and saying that CCTV wasn't working raises lot of doubts.

·        College was closed. But why the protest (which led to provocation) was allowed? Some saffron dressed people/students are also seen among the protesters. What does it mean?

Finally, I would conclude that the statue was vandalized after the roadshow got over and the police and the media left the place. According to ceteran Congress leader Arunav Ghosh (who is anti-BJP), Amit Shah would have been assaulted seriously had there not been central force around him. That means the central forces rescued him. I think jury is out in open on 'who broke the statue'. Whosoever has broken it should be punished severely. However, the TMC and college administration needs to answer the above questions. BJP too need to answer or clear the air whether the ABVP students were involved or not.
