Who is your child's teacher?
The country celebrated Teacher's day on 5th of September and has been doing so since 1962. It might come as a surprise to many that the celebration of this day(not this date) is a global phenomenon.

Ask yourself, why do we celebrate Teacher's day? What does it mean? Over the last few decades, how has the teacher community evolved?

When we were growing up, teaching involved attaining knowledge of alphabets, numbers, sentences, grammar, math, algebra, social sciences, history and geography like subjects. There was always a guideline. The teachers adhered to what they learnt in their days. The books paved a way to knowledge. Why did that system work or didn't work?

Our generation, our society has a lot of issues. A whole lot of problems. They say, it takes a community to raise a child. So, who forms that community? Parents, teachers, friends and extended family?

We have forgotten the parents role. The teachers of our children are all and sundry who contribute in their growth. It includes the vegetable-vendor, the maids, our drivers, the cleaners we ourselves and lastly the teachers in school.

There is no measure of what a child learns and from whom. Hence our relationship with our child's teachers is key, in creating the right level of support for the child to "learn" freely.

No longer are the classroom teachers simply book readers, notes distributors. Their role is to teach our children how to learn, not just what to learn. That is a subject for another discussion, but what we all collectively need to do is to bring all the stake-holders together.

It is the parent, the ultimate teacher who can bring all the learning together and make sense for the child. A parent, the guiding light can string together all the colorful beads laid out in a meaningful way. The parent's role changes from the primary care-giver to a teacher to being the best friend in a matter of just a few years.

To provide a wholesome learning experience for the child, all the teachers in the child's life must come together to build a safe, stimulating, free and curious environment for the child.
