Whose life is it, anyway?
If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise. - Robert Fritz
EVER DAYDREAMED about dancing rather than attending a boring lecture of network theorems? Or about painting human beings instead of dissecting them? Does everything you listen to in class or read in your textbook hold no meaning for you? Are you really truly happy in your chosen field?

If the answer to all the above questions except the last one is yes, then my friend, don’t panic. There are others like you. A survey done among the students of Nagpur reveals that, there are about 27 per cent of students, who secretly wish to be in another career. But why are there a percentage of students, however small, not happy? This survey shows the amount of say that a student himself has, to choose his own life path.

Even today, people believe that there are only two career paths worth pursuing – Engineering and Medicine. Anything other than these two is just considered a “second option”. “A person doing any of the above mentioned courses enjoys a position in the society that students from other courses, can only dream about, says a lecturer, LAD College. Another factor that determines a child’s future is his marks.

Can you imagine the chaos created at home, if a student who scores 95% in his exams, wants to do Fine Arts and an average student scoring a measly 65% dreams of becoming a doctor? Why don’t parents understand the fact that practical knowledge and application is more important than what you can mug up and then vomit out in the written exam? Suhasini Khot, whose daughter is studying in a city college, has this to say, “Parents want their children to be well settled and live comfortably. No one wants to see their children trying to stay afloat, in uncharted waters”. Sadly, this is just one aspect of the problem.

Remember the character, Karan Shergill played by Hrithik Roshan, in the movie Lakshya? A student, citing this example says, “Like Karan, there are so many students who are totally clueless about what they want to do after their 12th standard boards”. Karan got lucky when the field that he went into proved to be ideal for him. But not everyone gets lucky. Don’t the increased number of suicides and suicide attempts showcase perfectly, the kind of peer pressure that a lot of students face? And then take the easy way out rather than fighting back. A II year physiotherapy student, who has witnessed nervous breakdowns and seen almost half of her class failing in the first year feels, “Career counseling and aptitude tests should be made a must after 10th and 12th standards. Lots of students first take up a popular course, and then can’t cope up with the stress and resort to desperate measures”.

Not only while in college but this pattern is also present in many working professionals. Many of them become stagnant and feel no enthusiasm towards their work. And this depression also hampers their personal life, in addition, to their professional one. This is the 21st century, people need to wake up. Why should others be allowed to manage your life? Take your decisions, make your life.

Remember the song:
It’s my life, it’s now or never, I ain’t gonna live forever.
I just wanna live while I am alive, it’s my life.
