Veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani has cited a Supreme Court verdict to demand that the Leader of Opposition should have a say in the selection of Election Commissioners. Here, one is forced to ask why Advani did nothing when BJP was in power.
VETERAN BHARATIYA Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani has cited a Supreme Court verdict to demand that there should be involvement of Leader of Opposition in selection of Election Commissioners. But the big question is what did he do for such an essential reform when he occupied the position of the Deputy Prime Minister of the country.
He is equally guilty and responsible for ignoring this important reform perhaps for misusing power for appointing his own men as Election Commissioners.
However, the demand for the Leader of Opposition to have a say in the selection of Election Commissioners is absolutely necessary. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh should take lead from the CVC fiasco and ansure that in future Election Commissioners, Vigilance Commissioners and Information Commissioners are selected by consensus between Prime Minister and Opposition Leader.Political parties should rise above partisan issues and ensure that only the best candidates are chosen for these posts as such as corruption, nepotism and red tape have dug deep roots in this country and only exceptional people can fight these.
It should also be ensured that people appointed on these posts should be of impeccable integrity as stated by the Supreme Court, so that they uphold the institutional integrity, which is essential to attain the difficult goals.
