After Harry Potter and his series of books, Gardens of the Moon is a fantasy series which is a whole lot different. We all enjoy reading fantasies, here are some reasons why Gardens of the Moon is really a great read.
WE ALL like fantasy, and the market seems to be overflowing with series of books on this topic. The Garden of the Moon seems like a fresh air in the wide array of such books available in the market.
'Gardens of the Moon' written by Steven Erikson is the opening chapter of the masterpiece Malazan Book of the Fallen. The storyline was developed as a part of a gaming series with collaboration of Ian Mcmellont by Erikson. But it was changed instead to a novel. The series as the name suggests is about Malazan Empire and its conquests, internal rivalry and the events of which Malazan Empire is a part either directly or indirectly.Gardens of the moon details the Malazan Empire’s campaign in the Seven Cities on a continent Genabackis. Five of the seven cities have already been occupied when the novel begins. What is different about this novel is that there is no main character or a protagonist on which the thread of the novel rides. There are multiple characters who witness different events which are interconnected with each other.
The novel opens up with the news that the current ruler of the empire has been assassinated by one of his own generals. This woman is the head of the Claw, which is an organization of master spies and assassins. She has crowned herself the new Empress. The story then moves forward seven years. There in a village named Itko Kan a young girl is possessed by an Ascendant, who is a powerful god like figure having his or her own house in which they rule. The Ascendant and his ally are in fact the former Emperor and his advisor who instead of dying have ascended. They are running a scheme to bring down the Empress. The novel moves forward two years and depicts the siege of Pale – one of the seven cities on Genabackis. Pale falls but at a terrible price to the Empire. Pale had been aided by Tiste Andii – one of the different races in the series. At the same time the aide to the Empress is on a secret mission – to wake up a tyrant so that the threat of the leader of Tiste Andii is dealt with and capture the last remaining free city Darujhistan. The novel then shifts its focus to Darujhistan detailing its caste system, the city’s setup and its politics. The Malazan’s then attack the city in their own way i.e. bribing the city’s assassins to kill those people who wield the power in the city. They then attack and capture the city robbed of its real power. All the characters then converge resulting in a compelling and enjoyable read. All the schemes come to fruit which makes the novel all the more interesting. There is magic, and then there are loads of characters and a deep plot which makes one want to read more. There are gods who try to sway the mortals’ matters for their own purposes. It consists everything that a fantasy is made of – magic, different races, a plot capable of running for several books and even romance. All in all it’s a must read. The character that I liked the most was Ganoes Paran a general whose integrity and thinking endeared him to me.
.The series is damn good. Fans of the series, checkout malazanempire.com as a really good central resource. Trust me, you'll have questions about the books :D
