Higgs Boson is a kind of elementary particle related to particle physics. It has a lot of importance in modern scientific theories of the universe. Higgs Boson was nick named as the 'God particle' by a Nobel laureate physicist from Fermilab.
IN IIN 1964 Peter Higgs, with five other theoretical physicists, said that an invisible field lying across the Universe gives particles their mass. This field interacts with the particles which produces atoms and gives them some weight, so that they do not move around the space at the speed of light. He predicted that the field could have a signature particle, which can be called as a massive boson.
To understand the Higgs Boson in detail, first you need to understand about, one of the most prominent theories of particle physics that is the 'standard model'. The whole universe is made up of twelve different matter particles and four forces. The twelve particles includes six quarks and six leptons. The quarks includes protons and neutrons whereas the leptons includes electron and the electron neutrino. The four forces are gravity, electromagnetic, strong and weak. All the theories are based on this standard model. But still this model has a missing piece – the Higgs Boson.
To find the Higgs Boson particle, the scientists tried to create the particle by colliding the protons together inside the Large Hadron Collider (LHS) at a speed close to the speed of the light. The fragments released by the collision, immediately deteriorate into smaller and stable sub-atomic particles. The Higgs particle decays into lighter particles, and the process follows a particular number of paths.
Recently, the scientists working on the Large Hadron Collider, said that they have discovered a particle that behaves in a similar way as the Higgs Boson particle behaves. This result was declared by Rolf Heuer, director-general of Cern, the home of the Large Hadron Collider. He said that the discovery will shed light on other mysteries of the universe and added: 'We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,' as reported in Dailymail.
The conformation of the existence of the Higgs Boson particle is not the end but the beginning of a new and more enlightened phase in particle physics. But the discovery still needs a high degree of certainity.
