Why is it so important to cover elephants before Assembly Elections in UP?
The symbols of Bahujan Samaj Party have been asked to be covered by the new code of conduct of the Election Commission. Political parties have objected to them as they are equal to advertisements and may influence the people.
CITING THAT the assembly elections are knocking at the doors in Uttar Pradesh that begins from February 4, the Election Commission is likely to pass orders whereby it would ask the state to cover the statues of Mayawati and elephants in Noida Park.

These things are done keeping in mind the election code of conduct. The Noida memorial park is a memorial to the Dalit leader and has two dozen statues of her along with mentor Kanshi Ram and Dr BR Ambedkar and others. There is also the Bahujan Samaj Party’s symbol the elephant in the memorial park.

Apparently some political parties have lodged a complaint that these statues acts as advertisements and they have an impact on the people, which might reflect on the votes. As reported in the hindustantimes.com, the government have taken down any advertisements after the model code of conduct came into effect but the statues and the elephants are yet to be covered.

It seems strange that political parties and especially the BJP cannot see the difference between an advertisement and a memorial statue. What difference does it make whether a statue in a park is covered or not is hard to comprehend?
At a time when leaders and political parties should make a strong agenda to bring the country back on its track these people are objecting to such trivial and silly things. They are wasting their precious time on such things which would hardly have any effect on the voting masses.

Another case in the point is the fact that there are many politicians who have their statues in UP, so are they also been asked by the Election Commission as to cover it up? This reminds us of 2004 Lok Sabha Elections, when Vajpayee's photo on bill boards across the country on the Golden quadrilateral National High way were covered by cloth.
