Many people have raised the question - should Indian mothers sell their wombs for the sake of money? Or should a law allow women to remain a machine for production of children? When it is giving pleasure and happiness to issueless couples, and giving all the happiness to couples - such women and their supporters don't see any bad consequence in surrogate motherhood.
IN INDIA, the 'business' of surrogate mothers is more relevant when the same is a business
worth hundreds of millions of dollars outside India. Any childless couple has to pay Rs 50 to 99 laces for a surrogate mother in the US while the same mother is available only in Rs. 5 to 10 lakhs in India.
As everyone is aware - the city of Anand in Gujarat is known for having many surrogate mothers. In fact, there are set ups where 35 mothers are being cared for the future sons and daughters - who themselves will occupy the homes of issueless couples. In India, there is no ban on these mothers as as happened in other countries. Although taking the decision of becoming a surrogate mother is not very easy. But due to poverty and low standards of living in the country many women apply for the same position against a single advertisement.
Although this is very sentimental and touchy issue of conceiving the baby and handing him/her over to another couple after being paid for it - many women say that it is pious work and this sacrifice is giving happiness to other families - and moreover surrogate motherhood is not a sin or a crime.
Sometimes life and society force people to become surrogate mothers. A young girl, when she refused to marry a man double her age for the [ayment of Rs one lakh, was kicked out of her home by her brother, and compelled to leave the home. A homeless lady on the roads, she saw an advertisement for making money, and chose this option. Now, after few months, she will deliver the baby and earn a few lakhs for her future livelihood. Another lady, mother of three children, who is also in an expecting condition, has to save her husband’s life who needs some immediate operation and surgery. Such women say that instead of selling their body, being a surrogate mother is a better option - as one can have nutritious food where such mothers are kept or employed.
As these mothers are going to give birth for some very rich couples, therefore they are having very good food, which they have never tasted before in their entire life. It is due to the good aspects of this phenomenon that these women are allowed to see their children and husbands when they desire so.
According to the Indian act, any woman can breed 4-5 feotus, whereas many countries do not allow pregnancies for more than two times. This is a short cut method of earning money for Indian women. They do not see this as a job and from a commercial point of view, rather they co-relate it with the welfare concept.
