Wildfires burn about 40 homes in California, Emergency declared
About 250 firefighters from several agencies and water-dropping aircraft are working to stop the flames from spreading, backed by engines and bulldozers. The fire near Tehachapi, dubbed the West fire, started about 3 p.m Tuesday.
TWO RAGING wildfires have destroyed dozens of homes in California. Fire officials said, more than 2000 acre wildfire has destroyed about 30 to 40 homes in the small hill community of Old West Ranch about 10 miles southeast of the Mojave Desert town of Tehachapi.

About 250 firefighters from several agencies and water-dropping aircraft are working to stop the flames from spreading, backed by engines and bulldozers. The fire near Tehachapi, dubbed the West fire, started about 3 p.m Tuesday.

The wind was blowing in every direction, making it difficult for firefighters to keep the flames from spreading. Homes in the eastern foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains were smoldering early Wednesday.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Michelle Puckett said, visitors and residents are warned to keep their car and house windows closed, as there is a lot of smoke in the area. According to the Emergency officials, hundreds of other structures are now threatened by these fast-moving flames.

At a former junior high school in Tehachapi, a shelter has been set up for evacuated residents. Many evacuated spent Tuesday night at the shelter. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Kern County.
