Will campaigns like 'Save Tigers' really help?
The dwindling number of tigers in the country has become an issue of major concern not only for the government but also for the people. Various non-government organizations are spreading awareness about the issue. But will such initiatives help.
THE NEWS on ‘Save Tigers’, is what I am reading daily in news papers, hearing on radio stations and watching on television. It is really shocking and appalling that only 1411 tigers are left in our country. The issue of wildlife extinction has again come into limelight when various organizations nature lovers, students, and others have started campaigning for saving the tigers. If we go back in time, in the beginning of 20th century there were approximately 40,000 tigers, the number reduced to 3,642 in the year 2002 and now it’s just 1411 in 2010.

The dwindling number of tigers in the country has become an issue of major concern not only for the government but also for the people. Keeping in mind the safety of tigers the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has stressed on protecting the tiger reserves and instructed to ban the entry of tourist jeeps, trucks, lorries or any other vehicle in the core areas. The government is also stressing on bringing tigers from foreign countries.

Various non-government organizations, nature lovers, students and others are spreading awareness through campaigns, peaceful protests, advertisements, social networking sites, blogs and even through SMS. They are appealing to the people to protect the tigers in every way. In recent times there has been a lot on news regarding the poaching of tigers especially in states like Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand etc. People should stop performing such shameful and awful activities.

Now the question is will these campaigns and protests really be of any help? I would say yes. There are so many people who don’t even know that only 1411 tigers are left in the country, they don’t even know about people performing awful activities like killing of wild animals. These campaigns and protests have helped a lot in spreading awareness throughout the world.
