SEVENTEEN MONTHS later Ajmal Kasab has finally been held guilty of murder, conspiracy and waging a war against a nation by a special court. Kasab is the only surviving terrorist among the nine others from the Mumbai terror attack of 26/11. Though the prosecution has asked for death penalty, the sentence of the court is still awaited.
In the 62 hour battle between terrorists and armed forces, the financial capital of the country was completely shaken. The terror attack claimed 166 lives which included 23 foreigners and 18 security personnel and top officials. Kasab was the only terrorist who was captured alive.
Kasab is the native of Faridkot in the Punjab region of Pakistan. He, along with nine other terrorists were trained in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and came to India on a suicide mission. There was a lot of evidence against Kasab. It included the CCTV footage, still photographs, eye witnesses as well. The trial is one of the fastest in the country. It began in May 2009. Kasab has been changing statements ever since. At first he accepted his motive of coming to India with the view of attack but later called himself a juvenile. After Kasab has been proven guilty, the quantum of the punishment issued by the court will be decided on May 6. And people are hoping the Kasab is not another pending case after Afzal Guru.
