Will Rs 1,500 Cr conceal the evil of Bhopal gas tragedy?
This EGoM report clearly proved that 89 years old Anderson is our guest of honor and India government has soft corner for USA. The two biggest industrial disasters- the 1984 Bhopal gas calamity and the recent (BP) oil spill have hit headlines.
RECOMMENDATION OF Rs 1500 crore compensation package for Bhopal gas victims by Empowered Group of Ministers is still a question mark. It is shameful! The question is what was our government doing in the last 26 years? Why should tax payers bear this entire extra burden? Why not rich politicians, who are ruling the country for so many years pay the whole amount along with Dow Chemicals? EGoM report is disappointing as it does not mention former Union carbide CEO Warren Anderson’s safe passage. Will this money heal the wounds?

This EGoM report clearly proved that 89 years old Anderson is our guest of honor and India government has soft corner for USA. The two biggest industrial disasters- the 1984 Bhopal gas calamity and the recent British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in the United States have hit big headlines in the world. Surprisingly, the Union Carbide India Limited (now Dow Chemicals) owned by an American in India, their victims are fighting for justice despite the 26 years of incident because in eyes of US government these victims belongs to poor country like India and their government is puppet in their hand. In same BP case, the US government has forced the oil giant to set up $20-billion fund to pay for assets and clean up the Gulf of Mexico. It is visibly US is adopting double standards and our government has ditched own people.

Why was Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) formed only 26 years later that’s too under public pressures. EGoM proposals have many loopholes. Why is union government funding the compensation and toxic clean up? In other words Dow Chemicals will not have to pay for the clean up and burden will taken up by Indian tax payers.

If it is not possible for India to extradite a 89 years old person and punish him taking into account the Indian political and judicial system, then atleast India should put pressure on the US based company to pay up dues without wasting additional time. If Indian government wants to redeem itself in public eye, it should take remedial action and bring to book the entire system and people responsible for Bhopal tragedy.
