Vidarbha is lagging behind the rest of Maharashtra. The economic backlog of the region is Rs. 2,00,000 Crores. This region has always been neglected by the government that forgets that there is Maharashtra beyond Mumbai, Pune and the western zone.
I RECENTLY paid a visit to the Vidarbha. To be more precise, I was in Yavatmal. The first thing that suggests that you are in the Vidarbha region of the state is the absence of any traces of green colour. An extremely dry weather welcomes you with the sun already throwing harsh heat on you at not even 8.30 in the morning.
The most disturbing thing is the visible difference in the surroundings - from a comparative greener backdrop in western Maharashtra to an entirely dry one here. It feels like this part of the state has been painted in various shades of yellow and brown. The dry and cracked soil is even more horrible a sight. It is difficult to believe that in this land, farmers are still trying to produce their livelihood. During my discussion with a couple of media professionals in the town, I learnt that Vidarbha is lagging behind the rest of Maharashtra. The economic backlog of the region is a huge amount of Rs. 2,00,000 Crores. This region has always been neglected by the government that actually forgets that there is Maharashtra beyond Mumbai, Pune and the western zone. A region that is rich in minerals and forest and adds its contribution to meeting with the electric needs of the state is still deprived of economic and political attention. Irrigation alone claims a backlog of Rs. 30,000 Crores as compared to the rest of the Maharashtra.
The demand for a separate state of Vidarbha is based on various issues. However, the ignorance by the state is adding to it. Though development cannot be promised, there is still room for hope for the same. A smaller state is easier to manage has been the separatists’ long standing argument. There is a possibility that an independent state of Vidarbha will stand stronger and the people there will benefit. But at the same time it is important to note that separating a part of a state is not something that can be done on a ‘trial and error’ basis. The decision, whatever it is, is going to affect the land forever.
For better and more focussed administration separate Vidarbha state should be formed. Historically this is a justified and logical demand. Negligence of Vidarbha for last 50 years has only added to problems, without any development.

The leaders of Vidarbha are far more equipped to take care of the issues here. In relevance with the issues here, they are knowledgable while western Maharastre leaders (the so called leaders of MH) are illiterate. And Shiv Sena top brass sitting their in Mumbai and claiming that they share the plight of Vidarbha common man are adding to their account of sins, which comes naturally to them.
