Win-win situation for Akali-BJP alliance in Punjab's Municipal Council polls
It was a win-win for Akali-BJP sworn alliance in Municipal Council polls. Shiromani Akali Dal (B) won 954 seats (73.55%). It had fielded 1297 candidates. And BJP won 365 (47.77%) seats out of 764.

In all the 22 districts of Punjab, 2050 wards, 6956 candidates contested. The Congress could get only 356 seats against fielding of 1246 candidates which comes to 28.57 per cent. BSP (K) had given tickets to 101 candidates and only 5 could win, just 4.95 per cent.

However, there were 3581 Independent candidates. Out of it 367 independents won. There were re-poll at two places - Ferozepur and Patiala - due to discrepancies in the voters' list.

During Municipal Council Polls, 28.50 lakh voters exercised their voting rights in 2062 wards across Punjab. However, barring few incidents, the polling passed off peacefully.

No doubt, the ruling partners, SAD-BJP, had claimed a lion's share of 74 per cent in Punjab MC Polls, Independents too have shown the feeling of their presence by winning 367 seats with 10.25 percent share.

SAD-BJP alliance claimed to have majority in the MC Polls because of development agenda taken during its campaign. The results are being taken as winning of semi-final for the coming 2017 Assembly Elections in Punjab.

Frankly speaking, with the decision of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) not to contest the Municipal Elections, the benefit has gone to SAD-BJP alliance but it will be a big challenge for the alliance party and the Congress as well, if AAP targets for Assembly Elections during 2017 in Punjab. The reason behind concentration of AAP on Punjab is due to the fact that during the Parliament Elections, it was only Punjab, which represented in the Upper House with 4 seats.

In fact, AAP has emerged as the new hope in this backdrop after coming into power during the Delhi Assembly Elections where BJP has failed to give a signal for the coming elections except creating a fear psychosis with Hindu Raj agenda which was not liked by a section of Hindus.

In fact, AAP has hit the situation with its slogan "We are different" - in its ideology thinking about the needs of the common man by sidelining the VIP culture.
