Microsoft has come up with yet another Mobile Phone OS with the name Windows Embedded Handheld . This OS adds up to the existing mobile phone operating systems- Windows Embedded Compact (formerly Windows CE), Windows Mobile 6.5, and the forthcoming Windows Phone 7.
It is well known that Windows Phone 7 won’t be able to run programs written on earlier versions of Windows Phones. The new phones running on Window Phone 7 will come on phones made for that OS especially which means it won’t be available as a software update.
With Windows Embedded Handheld Microsoft is putting something new into the fold. Though it can be used to make phones, this is really aimed at the kind of rugged devices that might be used by UPS or a retail worker stocking shelves, as opposed to the traveling executive.
The software will come in two versions, as announced by Microsoft on Wednesday, one in the second half of this year and the other in the second half of next year. Each will have a different operating system at its core.
These kinds of complications are creating a kind of confusion among the Microsoft watchers. The businesses are confused as well, as they are not sure where to spend time and put money. Fortunately for the consumers, they can just skip this as they won’t get any phone written on this platform. Windows Phone 7 or perhaps the Kin are the only things aimed at them.
However one speculation is that it can be aimed at any tablet or slate kind of handheld device. Microsoft has said that tablets are among the kinds of devices that can be built around Windows Embedded Compact.
Microsoft has been on a losing ground in the smartphone arena as Apple has made a great debut and still goes strong. They are trying to get things back on track. Windows lovers are waiting with their fingers crossed as the new phones with new OS will ship soon.
