With 16, 175 deaths, Tamil Nadu tops India in road accident deaths
Tamil Nadu has topped the list of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) with highest number of road accidents in the country. According to the statistics released by the NCRB, 4, 40, 042 road accidents took place in the country, which led to the death of 1, 39, 091 people. Tamil Nadu alone witnessed 67, 757 road accidents and 16, 175 deaths.

Uttar Pradesh follows Tamil Nadu with 24,478 accidents and 15,109 deaths. This is followed by Andhra Pradesh with 39,344 accidents and 14,966 deaths; Maharashtra with 45,247 accidents and 13,936 deaths; New Delhi with 6,937 accidents and 1,866 deaths. The Union Territory of Lakshadweep is the only place where no accidents have taken place.

The accidents mainly involved two-wheelers, followed by lorries and bicycles. Nearly eight accidents take place every hour in Tamil Nadu, which accounts for 15 percent of the total accidents in the country. Chennai is the main destination for accidents. But this time the traffic police is saying that the intensity has reduced compared to last year.

K Ramanujam, director general of police in Tamil Nadu, says: “We are creating awareness among the public and educating our officers about enforcement. We are improving our reaction time to emergencies, especially during the golden hour,” reported The Times of India. The police official added that as Tamil Nadu is the most urbanized state in India, the number of vehicles is more, and this is a main reason behind the increasing accidents in the state.

Raj Cherubal of Chennai City Connect, a non-governmental organization working on urban issues says that urban planning and engineering has not maintained pace with the fast development in the state. In the recent times, the speed of the vehicles has increased tremendously but there is no change in the engineering. Apart from this, the state government buses are one of the main causes in causing road accidents, as MTC has contributed to 114 accidents in the state.

The statistics by NCRB have also shown that a large number of accidents took place in the month of May and 16.7 percent accidents took place between 3 pm to 6 pm and 16.6 percent took place between 6 pm to 9 pm. The roads seem to be safer between from midnight to 3am.
