Woman power asserts itself in Indias economic surge
The inertia of traditional thinking is being shaken by the realities of a new age. The mindset in all the spheres has always. One of the compelling realities is that the Indian women (half the population of our country) has proven to be an asset.
INDIA HAS already stepped into the 21st century with confidence and optimism earnestly hoping it would explore the utmost potential of all its resources. In our journey from a mediocre nation to an influential country, we have successfully addressed many issues which involved traditional social thoughts and fears.
However, while we laud ourselves for our accomplishment in last few decades, it is also time to look into our social, cultural and personal realities. There exist some silent issues which, if not acknowledged and dealt with may translate themselves into the intense explosives which would disturb our voyage.
These bear special significance since the inertia of traditional thinking is being shaken by the realities of a new age. The mindsets in all spheres has always been challenging towards the sustainability of the progress. One of the compelling realities is that the Indian women (half the population of our country) has proven to be a competitive asset in different spheres yet is battling with the traditional mindset. Yes, the domestic violence at all levels -- physical, mental, psychological -- and in all classes (lower to higher) is still evident in our society which has now become a challenge before the new-age woman to overcome.
Today, she is a doctor, a homemaker, a successful businesswoman, a teacher, a minister even President of a country. As a mother, she is loving yet ambitious, honest, proficient, dependable yet hardworking and truthful, fiercely independent yet her family is priority, outgoing yet a homemaker. The journey was never a cakewalk, instead an outcome of several years of struggle against the social and customary and time-honoured mind sets. The Indian women transcended from the well of age-old thoughts and stepped into a modern world with renewed vigour and determination, ready to accept any change that would come across their path.
On the other hand, the society is yet to equally match up with the pace of the woman’s development and the traditional mindsets have not changed to a desired level. The new-age realities of a woman have never been understood. Being abused in many fronts, deprived of rights, expected to perform both ways (traditional as well as modern), criticised, if she dares to talk about her desires and ambitions, has shattered her personal life. Unfortunately, the legitimate dream for safe haven for a peaceful family has been disturbed by personal intolerance and escalating violence with the domestic conflict continuing to tear apart the serenity of the family.
Though family is her top priority yet she cannot be expected to be there always. The past was never as good as the today’s achievement, so women cannot hold themselves back. Maybe, it seems to be a silent issue yet it has an intense potential to shake the whole system as our progress is deeply embedded with our social and family life.
It is the right time to stop violence against woman and all alternatives should be examined in order to sustain the rise of woman power.
