WHETHER CROSSING their fingers or searching for four leaf clove, women are twice as likely as men to believe in superstitions. Half of women ignoring rituals such s walking underneath a ladder can change their luck for worse.

But less than a quarter of men admit of being superstitious, a survey has revealed. Psychology experts say women are more susceptible of trusting in luck because they have lower self esteem than men. They claim females are more likely to rely on factors other than their own abilities to help them through life.

And they believe Britons will become more superstitious following the London bombing.

Professor Richard Wiseman, who leads a team from The University of Hertfordshire looking at the sciences of luck, said habits such as touching wood and avoiding opening an umbrella inside become more prevalent in uncertain times.

“There is nothing they can do to prevent themselves being involved, so they are more likely to bring superstitious into the equation. Superstition is an attempt to control the uncontrollable. It might be that women feel more out of control in their lives than men and it tends to be connected with lower self esteem.”

The research showed that the English are more cynical about folk love than Scots. Overall, 36 per cent of Britons believe in ancient rituals compared to 44 per cent of Scott.

There is no doubt that women are more superstitious than men. This is changing as they are getting educated and working. This is because of the fact that women were allways controlled by men and were not allowed to stand on their feet and interact with the outside world. With the gaining of their freedom they have shown that they are not less than men in any way. Therefore I donot agree with the contention that women are low on self esteem. The women are running a hurdle race in this man's world.
