Women form the other half of the population on Earth. But often they are relegated to the background, and don't enjoy equal rights in many matters. A society that does not guarantee equal rights to..
DISCRIMINATION on any ground is discordant with the spirit of human rights. The most common ground on which discrimination is made is sex. Gender discrimination is the worst of all since it is against a human being who is the most intimate partner of man, and from whom he gets love, support and strength all through his life. However, the roots of discrimination is in the mind of man. Throughout the world, women are treated as an inferior sex. They are treated as property or possession of man with no individual identity; a weaker sex incapable to protect herself. Women are supposed to be fit only for reproductive and domestic roles and not for ones involving power and decision making. An ideal women is supposed to be one who is self effacing, self sacrificing, submissive and meek.Gender-based discrimination, which has its roots in gender bias, is frequently institutionalised and enforced by religious and cultural norms. It has been practised for such a long time that it has become a way of our life. From womb to tomb, a woman is under the constant fear of violence. She may be subjected to it at any place - in the streets, hospitals, trains, buses, workplace, police stations, educational institutions and within the so-called safe confines of home and even within the wombs of her mother in the form of female foeticide. The most unfortunate aspect of gender bias is that it has acted on women in such a way that she has herself become insensitive to her own identity, potetial and self respect. Girls are implicitly brought up in such a way that they do not want to become independent and most of them take pride in a dependent existence. A girl is socialised in such a way that her greatest ambtion is the attainment of a happy wifehood and motherhood. No society can progress until its women progress, which in turn, is not possible until they have a fair chance and conducive environment for their development. Therefore, equlity of mankind must be ensured for the development of the society. .
