Women empowerment! an Islamic way has been unveiled in Kerala
It is analytical report of a large Women Conference conducted in Kerala.
Place of women in Islam is a well-talked about subject in the modern world. Most of the time, the western media depict Muslim women as not having any social freedom, and chanied in balck Purdhas. An example from Kerala is something very different where a recent huge get-together of women titled, Kerala Women Conference conducted by Jamaat-e-Islami women wing proved how really Islam honour women, the half share of the population and as well the mothers of coming generations.

Jamaat-e-Islami, Kerala has well showcased its strength in proving what is the right role of women in Islam. A massive women conference recently held by the women wing of JIH Kerala could broadcast the messages of Islamic concepts of women empowerment. The conference in total said that according to Islamic principles, woman is equal to man with the similar responsibilities to carry over the social development. The conference hardly hit on the modern concepts of women being only a commodity to be undressed every where and utilized for sexual pleasure. Similarly, it also blamed the orthodoxy take of woman to be 'walled' at the residential places and no social right or responsibility.

The conference became historic as most of its background works including planning and execution were wholly handled by women. From writing wall-ads to charting the programme, from making road announcements to volunteering the masses turned up for the conference, everything was exclusively managed by women. That only makes the conference a distinct one.

The massive conference, which was attended by almost one lakh of women was not just an assembling of Muslim women. It raised a meaningful and drastic slogan, “Women Power for Social Revolution” which had been echoing all over the State since the background work for the conference started months back. The slogan openly meant that women, the half share of the society are not just supposed to be 'walled' at their homes, but deserved to carry out half responsibility for the social development. Evidently, Islamic principles always supported women's active participation in social issues and events. Jamaat women collected the examples for this from the life of Prophet Muhammed and described them to the people across the State.

Nor did the conference mean a gathering only to showcase JIH 's women strength of any groups with the sole purpose of contesting next elections as reported by most of the mainstream media in Kerala. First of all, it should be analyzed as an historic effort to identify the role of women not only in Islam but in general society too. More than the usual political forays, it rose a revolutionary slogan to the women tied up in the kitchen to get more involved in the social movements.

The conference urged women to realize and identify their role and status. Apart from continuing to be the slaves of TV serials and reality shows, keen efforts would be taken to increase their knowledge and social awareness.

Yvonne Ridley, a notable British journalist who inaugurated the conference through video conferencing following she has been denied visa by Indian government reiterated the necessity of women being morally and educationally sound as they are the mothers of the next generation.
