THE PEOPLE of Garhwal in Uttarakhand will soon hear the sound of a train. It will be like a dream coming true. They will be able to board the train from Karnaprayag in near future if all goes well as the Indian railways will soon start work on the 125 kms long Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line.

This rail line will not only boost tourism in the region but will also open new job opportunities for the people in one of the most economically backward areas of the hilly state of Uttarakhand. People in the Garhwal region are now looking with great expectations to the foundation stone laying ceremony of the must awaited Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line on November 9 by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Ms Sonia Gandhi.

The 125 kms long railway line in the mighty Himalayan region in one of the toughest terrains would not only make the travel between Karnaprayag and Rishikesh a delight but would also save time. The rail link will also help the Indian army as the region has close proximity to China on its north-eastern side, the rail route will not just be an advantage to the unemployed youth of the region but it will bring economic prosperity to the region of Garhwal.

Member of Parliament from Garhwal Satpal Maharaj revealed that the project would cost some Rs. 25,000 crores to the Indian government and the 125 kms rail line will have some 81 tunnels and some 13 stations will be built on this route. He said the foundation laying ceremony will be held on Nov 9, which is also the formation day of Uttarakhand.

Satpal Maharaj said the UPA government and especially the Congress party, was fully committed to the development of the hills and thus this ambitious rail project was undertaken by the Railway ministry. This rail link will help the pilgrims visiting Badrinath, Hemkund sahb, Valley of Flowers, Nanda Devi biosphere, etc and to those who wish to travel to Gairsain side would be able to travel by train upto Karnaprayag.

Strategically this rail line would also be of great help to the Indian army and other para-military forces who travel in this region which shares its border with China. Satpal Maharaj told that the project would be completed in the next five years and it was a gift by the Congress party to the people of state before elections.
