Workplace incivility: The new stress demon at work
Most people claim that they have experienced rude behaviour from their colleagues at some point of time or the other. Experts blame this on increasing competition and work pressure.
MOST PEOPLE must be familiar with the term workplace incivility and have been its victims at least once if not more. It is the new stress demon, which is becoming stronger with time. Experts at the American Psychological Association blame the problem on increasing competition and work pressure. According to experts, 75 to 80% of people have experienced rude behaviour, or have been insulted at workplace.
Experts call it an “insidious problem”, which not only leads to stress, but also affects work. The experts, however, are unable to target it because the root cause of this problem is yet unknown.
Paul Fairlie of Toronto, a psychologist and researcher by profession, explains that this behaviour can be blamed on work pressure and increasing competition. While companies are laying-off employees, but at the same time trying to maintain productivity, employees are under great pressure, and thus the uncivilized behaviour. It’s the nice ones who become the victims most of the times.
A survey conducted by Weber Shandwick and Powell Tate in co-operation with KRC Research showed that 43% of employees had experienced rude behaviour at workplace, while 38% said that workplace was become increasingly disrespectful. Also, 67% stressed on the need for civility training at workplace.
