Workshop on revival of Haryanvi folk dance form Rasiya
Anoop Lather, Director of Youth and Cultural Affairs Department of Kurukshetra University, has organised a five-day workshop for revival and promotion of a peculiar form of Haryanvi folk dance in its auditorium. The workshop began without any pomp and show in the university auditorium and will continue till February 17.

LATHER SAID that about 80 students, both boys and girls, from a dozen colleges and the UTD were selected and called, along with their incharges, to the university for training in this form of dance. They were shown videos of the folk dancing and singing which were shot during night performances in the villages of Palwal and Mewat areas 22 years ago. Lather himself is teaching both the trainers and trainees the specialties and peculiarities of the dance form from morning till evening in the university auditorium to make the trainees understand the vibrant dance form properly.

Musicians and lyricists are helping the trainees to learn the right steps and movements of body to play natural for the dance. The training will continue to make these students perfect in this form of folk dance by the end of the five day workshop, Lather hoped. After a rigorous training to these students and trainers of colleges affiliated to Kurukshetra university, a presentation of the dance form will be made in the university auditorium on the last day of the workshop.

It is worth mentioning that Lather, after joining Kurukshetra University in 1984 as Director of Youth and Cultural Affairs Department, has introduced many new items like Haryanvi Orchestra, Haryanvi Pop, Haryanvi Ghazal, Haryanvi poetry, Haryanvi Solo Dance for male and female, Solo instrument, Costumes,  Saang, Chaupal and Saangeet Sandhya to make the Haryana's culture vibrant and entertaining. He is called the Edison of Haryanvi culture in the world of performing art .

The Rasia form of Haryanvi folk-dance form has many specialties such as softness, tenderness, simplicity and naturalism, so far unknown to the young generation. This dance is performed after dinner till late night in the open spaces of the village where young and old, male and female aspire to participate. Young wives (Bhabhis) in veils cluster together to form a group and stand on one side with Lathis in their hands, posing as Gopis, while on the other side stand young ones of the village with shields or sticks in their hands posing as Gwalas (friends of Lord Krishna) during the Holi festival.

The old and experienced males stand between these two groups, singing Gaahe, a form of singing during the Holi festival with Dholak, Chimta, Manjeera, and Harmonium, etc. The young ladies dance when singing is going on, for a few minutes, and then the young males join the ladies in dancing. When there is a break in singing, the young ladies rush to their dance partners to beat them with lathis and sticks, and the males protect themselves with their own sticks and shields. It goes like a play for many hours, with dancing males and females, changing their turn. It is the main source of entertainment of the village folks during the Basant season of Holi festival everywhere in the rural sector.
