On Tuesday, World AIDS Day was observed by a local an NGO Social Welfare Society at Gossaigaon sub-division in Kokrajhar district of Assam. The society is making a commitment to honour and respect the dignity of those living with HIV.
THE WORLD AIDS Day was observed at Gossaigaon sub-division, Kokrajhar, Assam with an awareness programme on Tuesday (December 1), by a local non-government organisation (NGO) Social Welfare Society (SWS). The programme was a success as an awareness atmosphere arouse during the meeting.
Majendra Narjary, MLA, said during the meeting that the day is observed in order to spread awareness among the people about the deadly disease and its causes. Due to AIDS, more than 25 million people died between 1981 and 2007 and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV positive as of 2008.
Despite recently, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated two million lives in 2008, of which about 270,000 were children. So, special care should be taken to make them aware of this disease and to reach the dream of an HIV free society.
“This World AIDS Day, the universal access and human rights theme is about us, about communities, about people like you and me and our Welfare Society is making a commitment to honour and respect the dignity of the vulnerable and to those already living with HIV,” said Rajen Narjary, MCLA and advisor of SWS.
