AFTER AN Intelligence Bureau tip off that the World Badminton Championship beginning in Hyderabad on Monday (August 10), is a terror target, security has been beefed up for the tournament as some of the top shuttlers are scheduled to participate.
IB had given specific information to the state authorities that terrorists could strike at the badminton championship just as they did against the Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore. Soon after receiving the information, state police and intelligence authorities immediately went into overdrive and security was beefed up to prevent any untoward incident.
Police said special teams with metal detectors and sniffer dogs have been placed at strategic points and security has strengthened at the tournament venue. In addition, players are bing provided with armed escorts for their movement in the city. Intelligence sleuths had prolonged meetings with the organisers of the tournaments, in which they asked them about any specific threats from Pakistan.
Tournament officials were also asked to give details of all the phone calls received during the last few days. Details of all the players and officials participating in the world championship were also taken by officials.
As per sources, there are inputs that Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives could attack Hyderabad, New Delhi and Kolkatta around August 15.
