World Blood Donor Day being observed globally today with theme "Give Blood. Give Now. Give Often"
The World Blood Donor Day (WBDD), June 14, is being celebrated with the theme "Give Blood. Give Now. Give Often" to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.

Established in 2004, the observance is an official global public health campaign marked by the World Health Organization (WHO) since transfusion of blood and blood products helps in saving millions of lives every year.

It is held that access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability, therefore, blood donation is essential.

On this day, voluntary unpaid blood donations camps are held and hospitals also celebrate to commemorate the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner – a great scientist who won the Nobel Prize for his great discovery of the ABO blood group system.

According to WHO, this year's campaign underlines the role that every single person can play in helping others in emergency situations, by giving the valuable gift of blood.

Under the theme of this year, the main focus is on the fact that it is important to give blood regularly, so that the blood stock is sufficient before an emergency arises, adds WHO.
