World Cup football and minnow India
It is highly surprising the world's second most populous country India not competing in the eventual mass sports event despite millions of Indian fans is following the live football.
IT IS not new in India that cricket is a religion for fans. However, in other countries, football is a global deity like cricket is in India. No other sports have successfully touched the hearts like football around the world. It is highly surprising the world's second most populous country India is not competing in the eventual mass sports event despite millions of Indian fans is following the live football. Our obsession with cricket has reduced all other sports to limited interests, including the national game hockey.

It is not only about interest; the main reason is lack of fund and sponsoring bodies for other sports. Our government does have sports bodies but they do not have strategy to concentrate on other sports except than cricket, as it is only money minting machine. The sports bodies should learnt from Brazilian experience, which is not only producing world-class teams for football, also volleyball to basketball. If we talk about Olympics what is our position and medal tally? How embarrassing it is? Our government does not bother to improve country’s image despite we are non-performing in most of the sports. We hardly heard about aid provided by government to other sports and sports minister talking about new lease of life to sports. All are in news for wrong reasons. Most of the times, we found them fighting for chairmanship or director and so on, blaming each others and malign country’s figure on world map.

It would be wrong to say Indians are not obsessive about football, the millions of fans are following all matches with great enthusiasm through out India. Earlier India's home to football Kolkatta had witnessed East Bengal versus Mohun Bagan match with full of capacity. Instead of professionalism, Kolkata allowed it to drop into a cesspool of weakness, much like the rest of Bengal.

In my view, it will be late by the time when the hopeless football administrators and bodies will wake and rest of the world will already left us far behind. Are we country of rabbles? For how long our other sports will continue to suffer?

Its really very shocking when we think the staus of our country in terms of football on the one hand and cricket on the other. While this is the crude fact that football is loved by people across generation. People as during this time get engulfed to the passion of football mania. But at present it seems to me as you also pointed out this is lack of funding and encouragement by govt. or pvt. body the fever of football is restricted to either Kolkata or goa. In fact any games other than cricket is at crossroad and not finding any incentives from any sides. Private sponsorship comes into action when someone starsts selling otherwise they left in obliviion. At prsent this is cricket which is justifying that nothing succeds like success. It attracts huge sponsorship and provides more than sufficent time to showcase one's poroduct. Other games are normally of shorter version therefore fails to catch the attentions of people. This is what has forced the bigwig of the country to remain focussed to cricket. unless and until some football players take the game to international level themselves I don't feel football can take the rightful place. After all cricket got recognition only after 1983 world cup.
Rightly said Neetu Banga. it is the responsibility of the government to do for the sport. the soccer enthusiast are enthusiastic enough. it the the government thats lacking the enthusiasm.
